Evaluating the impact of training looms over L&D professionals with each course, program, event, and resource created. As a learning professional you may have felt that the course you delivered was a success because the participants enjoyed the material and appreciated the learning. Your business leaders, however, may not have the same sentiments if the learning does not meet the business objectives. This article explores how you can ensure a learning transfer while getting the results that your business leaders want...and need.

Have you received a request for training without knowing the purpose of the request or what it is intended to improve? This article explores the performance assessment process and how performance is the improvement learning should be solving for rather than knowledge. Assessing performance needs is the first step to managing it effectively.

"Too often, a training program simply offers the pretense of addressing an issue, without actually getting to its underlying cause."

This article on learning technology trends is already two years old but  the themes are still relevant today. Which of them are you still building a strategy for?

"Trends that seem to have nothing to do with learning will, inevitably, impact learning development and strategy in ways we may never have imagined."

With our members in mind, our ATD-VOS leadership team met on Jan 20 to put in place our action strategy for 2018. We have three returning board members, four new board members and expanded our Ambassador team from two to five. Needless to say our meeting was vibrant and full of new ideas!

This year we’re putting our focus on delivering member value and supporting this with guiding principles of simplicity, transparency and leverage. Plans are being ironed as I write but you can expect to help us understand what will provide the most value to you through our annual member survey, you can expect to see some different types of programming including more webinars, and you can expect us to start to experiment with more online content and articles through a burgeoning community of practice. We’ll continue to develop our partnerships with other talent organizations in the Valley.

I’m curious: What is the biggest value you get from ATD? What’s your biggest pain point? We will be working to ask and listen so that we can align our work with what’s useful. Please email me with your thoughts. President@atdvos.org

As talent development professionals, we are very good at proving what people need to learn, and designing how they will learn, but do we do enough to explain why learning is necessary?

2017 has come to an end, and many executives are formulating goals for 2018. Sales forecasts and budget allocations are vital to pin down, but the biggest factor of success can often be traced to the progress and performance of employees. What types of training initiatives are going to create a company that is fundamentally better and more profitable next year than it is today?
